Biography - Vincent L. Anthony, MD, MPH, FASN

While medical science has been around for as long as man has existed, its boundaries continue to expand as physicians narrow their focus on finding cures for illnesses, reducing the gap between prevention, cause, and cure. A cornerstone of this shift in paradigm is a board certified pioneer in renal medicine, Dr. Vincent Anthony. As the fields of science and technology collectively attempt to shift the focus toward the strictly academic end of the spectrum Dr. Anthony emerges as a vocal advocate for the comprehensive role the patient plays in his/her own health, wellness, and healing. This philosophy has spawned the development of the Kidney Care Institute, a downtown Los Angeles based facility that is the epicenter of a revolutionary approach to health management, specifically related to Nephrology.

So innovative is Dr. Anthony’s perspective on (Nephrology) this anatomical subspecialty that he has coined the kidneys as the body’s “second brain”. To have a discussion with him about the integral role the kidneys play in the body is to attempt to perform your own “surgery” into the depths of this mastermind’s passion for the subject and his compassion for people. The more you know is the more you want to know. While other doctors, insurance companies, and pharmaceutical companies use big numbers and statistics to scare patients or potential patients, he uses those same numbers to take the mystery out of the science. He reduces overwhelming information into easily digestible layman’s terms, bringing greater awareness to individuals on how critically important kidney function is to our overall health. However, the process does not stop there. Through the Kidney Care Institute, launched in Los Angeles, CA in 2007, Dr. Anthony is in the process of building a complex matrix of interwoven faculties to better facilitate the health maintenance process. Key among these factors is patient education. He believes that “wellness begins with a state of mind and understanding true health comes from understanding ones own body.” In addition to an educational component, through the institute, he will merge the best in research technology, treatment options, other medical specialists, physicians’ assistants, nurses, and clinical quality nurse specialists to provide complete services to patients. The institute’s objective is to position itself as a leading comprehensive service provider to hospitals, to the health care industry and most importantly to the patient. Perhaps the most unconventional element in both his personal viewpoint and his business model is the merger between eastern and western health and wellness philosophies. He believes that eastern and western medicines are complimentary and therefore do not necessarily negate each other but rather are on a circular continuum. “The two should work hand in hand,” he says.

While most global attention goes to high blood pressure, hypertension, and diabetes, Dr. Anthony insists that the kidney plays a vital role in the management of all three diseases and numerous others. For this reason, he regularly participates in numerous delegations on health care worldwide. From Brazil to China, Belize to Mongolia, he is a respected leader in his field and continues to accept invitations to speak to global audiences on health care.

Among his many credentials are: A Bachelor of Science from Tulane University College of Arts and Sciences, a Masters Degree from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, an FASN (high level designation fellowship from the American Society of Nephrology), an SCH (Specialist in Clinical Hypertension), and a CPE (Certified Physician Executive accreditation). The CPE is a certification that involves learning the intricacies of the business and finance aspects of the health care system in its entirety. Dr. Anthony completed his Internal Medicine residency (MD) at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA and completed his subspecialty training in Nephrology and Hypertension at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, New York. He will obtain an MBA degree from Bellevue University in the fall of 2011.

With a seemingly impossible schedule, Dr. Anthony makes the time to take on a new role as a “community health activist” of new world order. He believes that a community is only as prosperous as its residents are healthy. Through the Kidney Care Institute he has been the key physician and medical services entity at numerous health fairs that provide health screenings to the underprivileged. Through these venues, he has been able to speak to vast numbers of people on a national and international level and simultaneously provide them with quality hands-on health care. This is fortuitous for him because travel is among his many passions. When not in his office, on the road on a mission to heal the sick or absorbing fascinating cultures around the world Dr. Anthony relishes quality time with his family and friends.

Having arrived to Los Angeles in 2006, Dr. Anthony acknowledges that he has established his business in a city where external beauty rules. Through his practice and the Kidney Care Institute, however he hopes to remind us that a beautifully functioning internal body should take precedence. In him, it is easy to recognize decades of practice, passion and a lifetime of compassion.wledges that he has established his business in a city where external beauty rules.
